I’m hearing that a multi-team deal involving Jason Bay and the Florida Marlins is in the “final stages.” This could involve the previously in-place dealings involving Manny Ramirez as reported by our own John Perrotto. Joe Frisaro of MLB.com thinks that Bay could end up in Boston, Jeremy Hermida in Pittsburgh, and prospects flying every which way. My sources agree, though I will update as details become clearer.
OK, that may be a little strong…but I’m sick of the annual “Get him gone” faction of Red Sox Nation that pops up every July.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again…I don’t care if Manny kicks kittens into traffic as he walks down the street…I will take his performance at the plate (and even in the field) every day and twice on Sundays. The morons in the media and screaming on talk radio who want him gone because he’s such a malcontent…what a bunch of mouthbreathing morons.
Interesting note…you all know who Manny’s agent is now, right? That’s right…Scott Boras. HOWEVER, I’m fairly certain that if the Sox exercise the $20 million option (which I really hope they do), Boras gets none of it…because he wasn’t Manny’s agent when the current contract was negotiated. Ironically enough, Manny’s former agent, Jeff Moorad, is now an owner of the Diamondbacks.
So where is Boras better off…if Manny is traded and/or his option is not exercised, or if Manny is ‘forced’ to play for the Sox in 2009? Have we ever heard Manny talking about his next contract as we have in the past few days?
The Sox manage to squeak by the upstart Devil Rays (they are still the Devil Rays to me) to regain 1st place.
No; I didn’t forget about you all…I’ve just been busy at work and then I was on vacation the past couple of weeks.
I like the Sox position right now. Starting pitching has been decent, hitting has been pretty good despite the loss of Ortiz, and the biggest glaring hole is middle relief. Yet they sit in 1st place right now, with Ortiz coming back at the end of the month. Will they make a trade? One would think that they would for middle relief; but what exactly is out there?
While I consider myself a Celtics fan; I am the first to admit that I’m a TOTAL bandwagon fan. I’ve not given the NBA much more than a passing glance for well over 15 years now. Even college basketball I only pay attention to the tournament. Not because I don’t enjoy watching it, but because if I was a diehard basketball watcher to go along with baseball and football; I’d have ZERO life.
So for those of you who DO live and die with the Celtics, a hearty congratulations to you. That was one helluva statement game last night.
Spent a nice, hot day at the park. Second time I’ve seen Masterson this year (first was in AA); he looked damned good. So did Bedard. I haven’t read up any recaps; but I was surprised they didn’t leave Bedard in for 1 more lefty batter, especially since that batter hit the game winning home run.
When they say Fenway South, they ain’t kidding. The reaction as heard on TV when Manny hit his 500th was unbelievable; I can imagine what it was like for those who were there.
For those who have not made the trek to Camden Yards for a Sox/O’s game, I cannot recommend it enough. Longtime psf.com participants have been a few times; yours truly even organized a couple of pretty big outings there in 2004 and 2005 (big enough where the O’s still call me every spring!)
Baltimore is a great place for a getaway..whether it be for the weekend, or just a couple of warm days during the week. With kids, or without. Lots of great stuff to do; even if you DON’T get to Camden Yards…although it really is a great place to see a game.
If you do go to Charm City for a trip, be sure not to miss the Fell’s Point and Federal Hill areas…don’t confine yourself to the Inner Harbor. It is all fairly close, and it is all worth the effort.
And be sure to visit Salt, voted best new restaurant in Baltimore in 2006!
I don’t know how the psf.com European contingent does it. This year, I haven’t even tried. I watched most of the first inning last night and went to bed lest I get sucked in to watching the game until the end (which I probably would have). I feel more alert today as a result.
Congrats to Lester on his no-no…I almost missed it. I didn’t turn the game on until it was 5-0, so I figured I’d go clean out the garage. The radio wasn’t coming in out there, so I figured I’d just check the score later. Thankfully, someone sent me a message during the 7th inning, so I caught the end.
4 no hitters since 2001; that’s amazing, isn’t it?
if you check in the comments of the last post, chatter Crab was kind enough to save the chat transcript from the no-no. I didn’t have my laptop at home last night so I couldn’t join in.
Of course, I did not think that something special would be a no-hitter. No, you don’t go to Fenway Park to see one of those. No, I thought maybe I would see MannyBeingManny’s 499th homer, or maybe I would see Jose Guillen crack three doubles off the Monster (he was the Morning Line favorite to be my column), or maybe I would see Papi hit one of those ninth inning home runs, or maybe … one of the five best words in sports — maybe.
If you aren’t reading Posnanski, a columnist for the Kansas City Star, on a regular basis…you should be.
5-0 with a 2.43 ERA and batters are hitting .296 and slugging .281 against him.
So why am I nervous every time Matsuzaka takes the mound?
It isn’t like he’s completely wild with no control; it seems that he’s trying to be a finesse nibbler. Someone needs to tell him that we don’t need a Japanese Jon Lester; we need a Japanese Josh Beckett. Enough with the walks, already….throw strikes!
