Pitchers and Catchers!

February 12, 2009 in Uncategorized

Including the rotting corpses of John Smoltz and Jason Varitek!

I’m kidding…I think there is a chance Smoltz could be productive.

So only a month and a half or so before the 2009 campaign begins in earnest.  Could be 4 AL East teams in the mix, IMHO.  I promise to do a proper preseason writeup sometime during Spring Training.

  1. We were sitting at a table at a pub last night and on the TV a scroll went by under the screen and I just caught the tail end and it said “Red Sox Pitcher John Smoltz….” when I read that I smiled. John Smoltz, good pick up. Like Saberhagen without the missing arm.

  2. I was at the Garden for a Celtics game a while back – Smotz was sitting at a courtside seat and Wille Maye introduced him as the newest member of the Red Sox. Smotz got a standing ovation throughout the timeout, didn’t have the opportunity to field a question until the next interruption in play.

  3. IF Ortiz and Lowell have recouped from their injuries…Team seems pretty well rounded and maybe as deep as I’ve ever seen.

    Pitching and defense baby!

  4. Wally, I am not hitching my Bar-B-Q wagon to Ortiz.

I am sure that Lowell will make it back, I don’t want to be one who regurgitates what he reads but if Ortiz doesn’t/hasn’t got into shape he is the next Sox first baseman at The Lucky Lady eating hot dogs at 2AM.

  5. sox have more question marks than the yankees…which is unusual

  6. I’ve read quite a bit over the Winter and it seems to me that the Yankees have more question marks than the Red Sox have. The Yankee bullpen, their outfield defense, and their catching and second base seem to be big question marks. Why is Waldo always the only optimist?

  7. Ach, you responded to 10 seconds of Smoltz on TV at the bar last night with a wry smile and pessimism. Didn’t you know that this was old, old news that he was on the Red Sox? A delayed reaction, I’m sure. Do you have a TV at home. Did you tell your drinking buddies that the Red Sox are sure to suck in 2009 and you will guarantee it?

  8. I was at the Garden for a Celtics game a while back – Smotz was sitting at a courtside seat and Wille Maye introduced him as the newest member of the Red Sox. Smotz got a standing ovation throughout the timeout, didn’t have the opportunity to field a question until the next interruption in play.

And then Chucks cellphone rang and it was a call from someone wanting to sell him some oceanfront at Revere Beach. Chucks then tried to get a hot dog from a vendor with no mustard on it but the vendor said that all hot dogs came with mustard. Chucks then went down to the concession stand and got a frankfurter with sauerkraut. Chucks on his way back to his seat met a childhood friend named Fred from Medford who said in a loud voice to him ” Theo should get fired”. He then met another friend from Malden who said that Theo was the cause of the Wall Street crash and was a no good Fascist pig and told him what was coming on the History channel that night.

  9. Fred Lynn may have bulked up on steroids says Cater but “it is just supposition, speculation, and guesswork on my part, he says.. I really have no evidence or sources but I just want to annoy you and pollute your minds by saying so. I am not a troll but I just like to spew some shit once in awhile to keep you guys honest. Let’s discuss this I have no evidence at all but “Did Fred Lynn use steroids?”

  10. Um Dick I mean Cathy, I knew Smoltz was on the team loooong ago. But to see it in front of me was a pleasant reminder of a good addition, unlike your posts which are purile and unpleasant reminders.

  11. ach,

Time will tell regarding Ortiz, but, word has it that he has lost some fat and is “chiseled” after spending the winter getting in shape. Aint seen him, but I gotta believe that he is aware that he needs to compensate for his age and the injuries that have plagued him over the past two season if he wants to continue being the terror he was. I suspect his ego is large enough to compel him to make every effort to do so…..of course, he has enough dough so he could just ride out his contract and eat hot dogs by the dozens.

Remember, we are talking baseball players..not athletes….if he can regain the bat speed, and if his wrist is solid…I’m not worried about his power numbers.

  12. cater,

“The Sox have more question marks than the Yanks”??

I want some of what you are smoking my brother….I aint had a mind bending buzz like that in years.

    cathy,

Do you enjoy sitting at the computer and practicing mental masturbation?…the only one enjoying your little comments is you, and in spite of popular theory regarding us manly men, most of us don’t really want to watch while you get yourself off.

  13. alright, i was exaggerating, wally, but the sox have question marks.
    1. Is Jed Lowrie the starting shortstop?
    2. Who really is catching for sox?
    3. Who will pick up Manny’s bat/offensive load in 09?
    4. Do the Sox have depth in the field? Or is just filled
with injured/damaged players (Kotsay, Baldelli, etc)
    5. What if Ellsbury tanks like he did in the playoffs?

Lot of pressure on Pedroia, Youkilis to continue to produce at 08 levels.

The Sox have strength in the most important area, which is pitching.
They are loaded, that I will say

But I’ve seen years where the Sox were pitching-heavy, everything-else light, and it would be a lot of agonizing 4-3, 2-1 losses. . .Still hard to figure if this team is a playoff team or a 3rd place finisher.

  14. Im looking forward to the season. Pitching is certainly strong, the bullpen has the potential of being ridiculously good.
    Papelbon
    Saito
    Ramirez
    Lopez
    Oki
    Masterson
    Delcarmen….
    WHOA, I mean come on.
    F texeira, we have youks
    Last year comparison
    1B
 Tex- .308/.410/.552, 33 HR, 121 RBI-
    Youk- .312/.390/.569, 29 HR, 115 RBI-

Healthy Lowell, Papi, MVP Pedroia and so on and so on.

Bring it on!!! arrr arrr arooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  15. What bo said…..

Barring major injuries, I dont see how this team doesnt win at least as many games as last year.

Pitching is better… both the starting rotation, and clearly, the pen.
    Defense is rock solid.
    Bench is deeper, better.

No Manny, and sure you miss that bat…but come on cater…this line up will be in the top three in the AL is just about every offensive category….and certainly in the most important one…runs scored.

Have a bit of faith and it will be rewarded.

  16. well, Drew is hurt, his replacements are hurt (hey there’s this guy who is still a free agent that would be perfect for the sox lineup….), Lowell and Papi are both a year older, a year more brittle, and in Big Papi’s case, hard to tell if he will just go into a funk permanently with his protection gone. Both shortstop and cf are great when they do hit, but you can see both can be massive liabilities offensively when they aren’t, like both did end of last year–playoffs. They have no replacements for them either. The catching spot is more befuddling than ever….Yes, the sox have 3 guys who you can honestly say are bonafide 2009 producers–Youks, Pedroia, and Bay–but i can’t even begin to say “top three in the AL” lineups. . .sorry, I hope they can stay healthy and produce, but now you are really stretching to say everyone does their job. It’s not that black and white.

  17. Law2005 and Monnslav agree 100% with what Cater just said.

  18. A-Rod steroids HGH performance-enhancing drugs it’s my cousins fault young naive and stupid A-Rod steroids HGH performance-enhancing drugs it’s my cousins fault young naive and stupid A-Rod steroids HGH performance-enhancing drugs it’s my cousins fault young naive and stupid A-Rod steroids HGH performance-enhancing drugs it’s my cousins fault young naive and stupid A-Rod steroids HGH performance-enhancing drugs it’s my cousins fault young naive and stupid A-Rod steroids HGH performance-enhancing drugs it’s my cousins fault young naive and stupid

OK, glad I got that out of my system – are you ready for some baseball?

  19. On the bright side, I do think CC will pitch well, and I think that Tex was a good pick-up, and I believe that Hughes will have a very solid season once they come to their senses and put Jobs back in the bullpen. That being said, I think the Yankees will be watching from home again this October, and Girardi will find himself on the firing line. You know, because it’s completely his fault that A-Rod took steroids, that Posada, Damon, Matsui, and (gulp) Rivera show all their age, that Carl Burnett will make 3 trips to the DL, and that the collective weight of playing in a billion dollar stadium with a $200 million payroll during a devastating recession will cause the team to cave in. And because everyone knows that if Torre was still here, they’d win the WS. Oy vey – the season hasn’t even started, and I want it to be over already.

  20. Hey Torre, if all of those things go bad, it sounds you sarcastically blame it on Girardi. We think differently here in Boston, if the sky falls, the entire blame must be pinned on Theo ( not Tito or the FO ).

  21. never too early for a little boston-NY mudslinging…I know you are, but what am I?

  22. The GM and Executive VP is not a member of the FO?

  23. I stand corrected, I should have said the rest of the FO.

  24. I think there’s a possibility that Girardi could even be fired if the Yankees don’t get off to a good start. Not sure that could/would happen in Boston. Well, after they fired Grady Little just because Pedro wouldn’t come out of Game 7, I guess anything is possible in Boston, too…

  25. Torre; I’m sorry I de-friended you on Facebook, but dude…free whopper!

  26. I read Torre’s comment 10 times and still don’t know what he is saying. Most of RSN Nation knows that Grady was the goat, and Pedro knew that he had nothing left, and Grady erred by keeping him in there. Pedro had to come out if Grady said so. So what else was possible? History says that Grady screwed up. What else is there to rehash? Grady was fired for good cause. No free whopper for you Torre.

  27. Cathy dear,

Are you serious? Torre’s comment was obviously tongue in cheek.

you make us girls look bad

  28. Stick a fork inem. Theyre done.

Anybody catch the Oaklnd A’s picking up my man OC and now they are hoping for Nomar. That is a little funny. Nomar and OC on the same team.

  30. Grady was fired
    No he wasn’t.

Well, not by the Sox, anyway.

  31. ach-

Theres a rumor that the sox disdain about oc is that he was fooling around w another players’ wife.

So the gas would be if he resumed his antics with mrs nomar. It would result in the MR. becoming extremely irritable, and constantly smiling in an irrational manner

    - herb

  32. rich,

The way “mrs. nomar” kicks a soccer ball. OC BETTER be damnned good in his purported dalliances, dontcha think?

Also, since Nomar, and supposedly mrs nomar, was already out of town by the time OC hit the streets and bedrooms of Boston, my guess is he probably wasn’t dallying with the mrs.

  33. I know it’s only ST..and thus a meaningless game…but it is the MFY’s, and it appears Tito is throwing out the starting nine to begin the game tonight.

    Anyone gonna be watching it?

    Anyone gonna be in here?

Have’nt had a good chat session in awhile…we may need a little ST to get back in chat shape.

  34. Foulkes-

I made a movie on 1968. If you want a copy send me your addy.

Bos i lost your addy- send it again.

ach ill mail your copy tomorrow.

My rumor mill information says that OC was messing around with Foulke’s wife – not Nomar’s wife. So the end result was the Sox getting rid of OC and Foulke becoming a mental case and thus a terrible pitcher thereafter. A very unfortunate scenario and definitely no fault of Theo. The team needs a full time counselor and psychiatrist to handle these misfits before they arrive here. Manny, thank God that you are gone.

  37. Ok Cathy. Roger that.

    herb

  38. the rumors I heard was that OC had a propensity for YOUNG girls. Never heard anything about Foulke…pretty sure his divorce was of his own doing..or rather who he was doing.

    I miss Manny.

  39. PSF-

    YOU MISS MANNY??????????????????

I sure dont. Well….I guess I miss his production, but apart from that he was one miserable fuk.

    herb

  40. I do miss him. We will miss his production (but at least have a full year of not having it, rather than having it taken away mid season), and will miss the pre-summer 2008 Manny. The way he forced his way out sucks, but I’m not letting that taint my overall view of him.

  41. Who wouldn’t miss his “i am happy this month production”? Problem was,you never knew what you were going to get. I have ZERO ZERO ZERO respect for him anymore. He disgraced the team IMO , he wants to claim his love for the Boston Fans? bullshit, he bitch slapped us along with his teammates. I think he is a greedy selfish little spoiled bitch.

    ty that is all

  42. I dont like to gang up, but i totally agree with bos. His absence for a time now allows one to reflect back with some altitude and see what a phony fuk he was. and his dealing w the dodgers show what a greedy puss he is.

I absolutely dont miss Manny the person. I like his replacement a whole lot better, and he just got here.

Manny had 8 years here to make a permanent good name for himself, and all he accomplished was the opposite. That sht he pulled which forced the sox to dump him was off the charts, and is a clear testament as to his character.

    GOOD RIDDANCE MANNY MONEY!

    el ricardo

  43. And furthermore, Im tired of those spics down there coming north and raping our yankee dollars!.

I SAY WE SHOULD EMBARGO THEM AND LEAVE THEM IN THEIR MUDDY VILLAGES, DAYS SPENT LUGGING BUCKETS OF WATER TO THEIR HOMES, AND DREAMING OF ONE DAY HAVING INDOOR PLUMBING.

ATTENTION SOUTH OF THE BORDER: WE ARE NOT YOUR FUKING ATM MACHINE. WE HAVE OUR OWN PROBLEMS.

    SPICS NEED NOT APPLY!

    EL RICARDO!

  44. AND MORE FURTHERMORE-

I SAY WE ALL JOIN HANDS AND MOVE TO IDAHO, BUY SOME GUNS, AND JOIN AN APPROPRIATE GROUP.

LETS TAKE MATTERS IN OUR OWN HANDS AND SETTLE THIS PROBLEM ONCE AND FOR ALL!

MY COUSIN WORKS AT HOME DEPOT- WE CAN GET ALL THE FERTILIZER WE NEED FOR FREE.

LETS DO IT! POWER TO THE WHITE PEOPLE!

    EL RICARDO

  45. AND AFTER WE EMBARGO OUT THE SPICS, LETS NOT STOP THERE.

ROUND UP ALL THE CATHOLICS, NEGROES, AND JEWS, AND SEND THEM BACK TO ITALY, AFRICA, AND ISRAEL.

OR BETTER YET, HERD THEM OUT WEST AND LOAD THEM UP ON BOXCARS- DESTINATION ALASKA. RIGHT AFTER THAT, WE DISOWN ALASKA AND GO BACK TO 49 STATES!

AND THEN IMPEACH THAT BLACK MUSLIM FUK OBAMA. IF WE CANT FIND CHARGES, JUST INVENT THEM! LIKE STALIN USED TO DO!

LETS MAKE THIS COUNTRY SNOW WHITE AGAIN, LIKE OUR FOREFATHERS INTENDED!

    YOUR BROTHER IN ARMS,
    EL RICARDO

  46. I MISS MANNY TOO. . .
    AND I MISS Q AND MBF. . .
    AND I MISS CHUCKS. . .
    AND BO. . .
    AND CHAT

  47. Well im here almost every day…

    STARING AT A WHITE ROOM…

    WITH DARK SHADOWS!

    HMMMMPH!

  48. rich,

    You forgot Eskimo’s…..

    What about the damn Eskimos????

  49. Let it all come out Rich, this is what a forum is for after all. We don’t really give a crap about what you say, what is paramount in here is your right to say it. After all, it is just a forum on the internet. What you say today can be 180 degrees different from what you say tomorrow and frankly I don’t give a damn. I am here merely to be entertained. If people are Manny apologists one day and despise him the next day – so what, it doesn’t bother me, everyone has a complete right to change their opinion, it is a free Country and after all this is merely an Internet forum where we come to to entertained, as long as reading the nonsensical dribble makes my day go by faster then I am happy, the room serves its purpose. There is no need to be well read in such an environment since even the village idiot can be entertaining and provacative and that is the name of the game. Carry on.

  50. cathy, you ignorant slut. please don’t carry on, in fact, don’t let your fat ass hit the chatdoor on the way out, you dingbat. your serious drivel has driven most of us batty and frankly we do give a damn about this site and the chat, so kindly shut the fuck up.
    sincerely,
    Manny Apologist

  51. I have been spending some time working in Charlotte County Florida for the past few weeks.

The Rays train there. Was sitting in a Tavern in Punta Gorda one night two weeks ago and it was me and my buddy and Joe Madon in there, nobody else. He struck up a conversation and we spent ten minutes chatting about baseball and a lot about the Price kid. It was a pleasure and he is a very nice guy.

Last Wednesday I was in a restaurant in Boca Grande Island just up the road from the training facility, evidently a lot of the players are staying there with family. Evan Longoria and some Huge tall guy, never caught his name but he was a player were seated at the bar.. I was separated from them by two old farts from Phillie and the old fart lady says “Hey guys thanks for the championship” Immediately pissing off the players. Longoria says something back to the guy and I looked over and said “What do you expect from a Phillie Fan”.

The old farts ask if they were well treated while in Phillie and the two players walk to my side of the bar section of the restaurant and proceed to tell me horror stories about airhorns outside their hotel 24 7 and all sorts of other BS. Longoria is not that big real young and again a real decent guy, talked to them for five minutes and their wives came in. They shook my hand and said good luck and I wished them well.

    It was a nice week.

  52. The Tard is back.

I had to go away back in 07, long story.

Look foward to once again joining the mind numbing babble that consumes the chat room.

Also looking foward to sitting in the cold for the 4-17 game.

Cougar season once again opens in The Back Bay.

Bag em early and save Boo Koo Bucks on Hotels.

As always Go Sox and don’t step in the dog Cater.

    Love Tard

    EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

  53. TARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dude…good to hear from you…thought you were dead, or in a gay commune in Frisco or something.

Great story ach….nice to have an opportunity to take 5 minutes of human time with the guys we watch play.

  54. ach-

    Nice, sweet story. cool.

    did u get the disc?

    herb

  55. ach said on April 3, 2009

GOT THE DISC< watched it, when I get a chance I will come in and visit and discuss, probably in 10 days.

  56. I know it works, PSF….but we are not using it. Been a long time since the room was full of folks most all day/night long. I hope the room gets more use this summer.
